TOD 27/01/2023 Professional Development

I came to the day hopeful that it would be useful and inspiring and I was not disappointed.

I loved the interactive nature of the day and I learnt a few more strategies that I will definitely be using in Gateway class.

In particular I want to try:

  • the donut activity - choose own partner, inside circle and outside circle, then move around and talk to other partners.
  • fold in line up - start with a continuum then fold it in.
  • choose an image that represents how you are feeling at the moment and how you feel at the end of the session.
  • time circle - continuum
  • whakatauki - what are your strengths/super powers, what grounds you, what are your goals, who and what supports you

The activities broke students out of comfort zones but in a safe way.

They encouraged whakawhanaungatanga.

Day 9 External (Internal lol) Recognition

Wow it's been 9 weeks!

I have been frustrated and learnt so much all at the same time!

I think I already had a good knowledge of how digital technologies can have a significant impact on accelerating achievement outcomes but this has certainly been a great reminder for me and cemented that belief. I really want our kids to not be at a disadvantage and to use these technologies to improve their outcomes.

I really enjoyed listening to Dorothy and gaining an understanding of the Manaiakalani pedagogy and kaupapa. The Manaiakalani staff have been so wonderful to listen to and learn from. I love the kaupapa of using digital technologies to enhance teaching and learning and their obvious love for this kaupapa. They were all honestly just lovely and I really look up to them.

I have loved learning new tips and tricks! Even something as simple as Ctrl Shift V has been such a time saver and I'm not kidding! Lots of little things I have learnt have added up to me feeling more digitially fluent. I just feel more confident and have happily learnt some new skills.

One of the highlights for me was seeing how my colleagues in my bubble group are using these things in their classrooms. Our group was just brilliant and so inspiring!

Maria was so supportive and I felt I could ask to share my screen a million times and ask lots of questions and it was still ok!

I did find that the course moved pretty quick for me but I could always ask when I needed more help.

To the Manaiakalani staff and my bubble group - Thank you so much for everything . You really have been a pleasure to work with and I am so grateful for all your knowledge and expertise. It's been truly lovely to get to know you all a little better. I'm particularly grateful to Maria. Maria - all the very best for a lovely holiday with family and some time at the beach where you don't have to organise anyone or anything!

Day 8 Computational Thinking

I really enjoyed Dorothy's "Empowered" korero as this is a kaupapa that is close to my heart as a school Guidance Counsellor.  I feel like Bay of Islands College did really well by our kids when we had lockdowns in ensuring that they all had devices and even internet access.  As you know from our Principal Edith's korero last week our results actually improved during lockdown.  I think it's important for me and our staff to remember that these tools and access to them should be a right for our kids and not an 'extra'.  Yes, we want them to continue to be empowered.  Thanks for that Dorothy.

The future of technology korero from Vicki was also really interesting.  I have heard similar korero at careers advisor workshops/conferences.  This was a good reminder and I can use these ideas with my Gateway class.  I need to find a copy of the jobs Vicki put up in her korero.  It was something along the lines of jobs we didn't used to have.

I had to pop out of the meeting for a bit but I do think that coding is a bit beyond me anyway.  Ahakoa he aha.  The seed has been planted for now.

Day 7 Devices

Had a turn on a chromebook - starting to learn how to use one - the kids have already shown me some things but I'm still not very good at using one.  Was really interesting to learn a few new things.

Had a turn at recording a screencastify.  It is about 4 seconds long and a 'test' one lol.  I would like to be able to do this properly but ran out of time today and once I'd recorded one I couldn't figure out how to get back to the main screen to record again 🙄

my dumb screencastify

Thanks Maria for showing me ctrl K so I could rename my link!

Ok - tried again with Maria's help - this is better and a record of how to do it!!

Am I the only one that thinks that poll thing is cool!!!!??  I want to learn how to use that!  I'm not sure what I'd use it for though.  Unless we go into lockdown again and I can use it for a zoom meeting with my classes maybe.

I learnt how to mute a tab today!! Thanks Makaore!

Day 6 DFI Enabling Access Sites

"Really?  You want me to create a Site?" 😂🙄

This was the thought I started today with.

"I'm not sure that a site will be that useful to me or that I can even manage to create one."

The task seemed overwhelming and I wasn't sure of its value.

Part way through the day I had pushed through and made some progress!

Thanks to my small group for being so patient with me and to Maria especially for all her help and letting me share my screen a million times a day.

I'm still not convinced I will be making and updating a brilliant site in the near future but I have been so inspired by my classmates sites.  How do they manage that while also teaching a full load?  They are superstars in my eyes!  I would be so happy to have my moko in any of their classes x

Day 5 DFI Collaborate Sites

Hearing of the loss of Cass today was incredibly sad.

Thank you group members for being here today.  It was good to see your faces.

I am very slowly getting the basics of sites. Veerrrry slowly.

Day 4 DFI Dealing with Data

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy:

Sharing being such an integral part of who most of us are.  This correlates well with my work as a guidance counsellor - having an 'audience' to who we are can be an important part of our self worth.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional/with my learners or in my personal life?

I have pinned the camera app to task bar so that I can have a go taking a photo with the laptop camera.

Helpful Hints - ctrl/shift/v when pasting - pastes text without formatting so that it takes on the format of wherever you are posting it.  This is such a timesaver!  Thanks Maria :)

Forms - I have answered lots of google forms but never created one myself.  I have created survey monkey instead.  Maybe this is outdated now - I'm not sure.

My Maps - I would like to be able to add points in maps and calculate the distance between each one as often do jogs that aren't on google maps.  I use the 'map my run' app on my phone which tells me once I have done the jog but it is good to get an estimate before I go.

Sheets - This section was really helpful for my gateway data.  Maybe I could start using sheets instead of just the table that I have created in google docs.  I am wondering what would be the advantages and disadvantages of this.  One of the advantages would be the graphs eg:
